Adaptability and psychological flexibility: Overlapping constructs?

Adaptability is purported to be a key mental resource and refers an individual's cognitive, behavioral, emotional regulation (or adjustment) in situations of change, novelty, uncertainty. Psychological flexibility person's capacity allow experience acceptance negative thoughts feelings with mindful awareness guided by commitment goal-driven action according their self-chosen values. It important disentangle these cognate constructs—adaptability psychological flexibility—so that the unique variance attributable each can estimated, interventions resources directed greater precision. The current study explored potential overlap between adaptability conducting online cross-sectional survey (n = 205), measures adaptability, flexibility, wellbeing, distress. A confirmatory factor analysis suggested considerable overlap, but sufficient discrimination two constructs. Structural equation modelling showed was related not distress after accounting for effects flexibility.
